How to Replace an Audi Replacement Key Service G28 Engine Speed Sensor

smart-logo.pngCharles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. If you have any of these issues it is likely your sensor is failing and audi Car Keys requires replacement. They're cheap and easy to find especially in the case of an Bosch model like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues with your vehicle. It's a vital component of your audi a4 replacement key's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

Lexus.jpgThe G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel and boost as well as timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This is a common feature across the audi keys replacement cost 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du You may also find some good ones in wrecking yards.
